A RETRACTABLE AWNING...
opens and closes to protect its own longevity against the elements: wind, rain, et cetera. Retractable awnings offer automatic features like remote control motors. Retractable awnings have no front supports and are only attached at the building wall. When the wind picks up, or heavy rain occurs, the retractable awning needs to be closed. Furthermore, if no one is going to be home, the retractable awning should be closed. If a pool of rainwater should accumulate on the fabric, the added weight could rip the fabric, or worse, could cause the retractable frame to tear away from the house (some manufacturers offer optional front supports). Keep in mind that the retractable awning will not cool your house when it is closed and your patio furniture will be wet after a brief rainfall.

A FIXED CANOPY...
has a rigid stationary frame, installed as a permanent fixture to your house, with support poles (front three legs) added for stability. The fabric cover is attached onto the fixed frame in the spring where it remains until removal in the fall. This allows you to shade your home and protect your patio or deck 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Rain or shine, your furniture is dry and you have added outdoor space for the kids to play or just relax on a warm summer night.
